The Wythe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) is the primary law enforcement agency servicing 29,235 people within 463 square miles (1,200 km2) of jurisdiction within Wythe County, VA.
Organization
The agency is currently headed by Sheriff Doug King.
Community Services:
- Project Peddler To protect citizens from fraudulent door to door salesmen.
- Victim/Witness Program To ensure that victims and witnesses of crime receive fair and compassionate treatment while participating in the criminal justice system.
- Cops In Schools The school resource officers provide safety and security, deter crime, investigate criminal activity that occurs on school property. They also educate faculty and staff on the rights and responsibilities of students.
- Class Action – Virginia Teens and the Law To educate Virginia Teens as members of the community about the law and their rights and responsibilities. School resource officers are trained to instruct this self-contained curriculum.[1]
Patrol:
- Smart & Sober Program To monitor DUI/DUID, speeding, reckless driving, safety belt, child safety seat and all other traffic violations.
- Child Safety Seat Training/Checkpoints They conduct child passenger safety seat checkpoints throughout the county to ensure that children are buckled up and/or properly placed in their child safety seat or booster seat.
- HEAT Help Eliminate Auto Theft
- MADD Mothers Against Drunk Driving [2]
Special Operations:
- Tactical Team They are highly trained in high risk arrest situations requiring a tactical response. The team is equipped with specialized weaponry to be utilized under these unique circumstances. They also support the Narcotics Division.[3]
